IHG One Pass Rate vs. Friends Rate: Which One Actually Saves You More

Most coverage describes IHG One Pass as two rates. There are three — and the one that gets left out is the one that decides which tier is worth paying for.

IHG retired the Friends & Family Rate on December 31, 2025, and the replacement took full effect the following January. Most coverage since then describes IHG One Pass as two rates: the One Pass Rate for a designated Plus One, and the One Pass Friends Rate for everyone else. There are three, and the one that usually gets left out is the one that decides which tier is worth paying for.

01What Changed When Friends & Family Ended

The old Friends & Family Rate ran on public booking links, which is why it circulated on forums for years. One Pass eliminates the links. Access now runs through an IHG colleague's account, and every discounted booking traces back to a specific person that colleague has designated in the system.

That structure produces the constraint most write-ups skip. The night allowances are shared pools tied to the colleague, not personal allocations. IHG's own program page states it directly: you share booking limits with your IHG Colleague.

02The Three Rates, and How They Differ

An IHG colleague can designate one Plus One and up to five Friends. The Plus One gets access to two rates; Friends get access to one.

Rate Discount Shared with Nights 50% F&B
One Pass Rate Fixed price by property ADR Colleague + Plus One 30 Yes
One Pass Flex Rate 35% to 50% off Colleague + Plus One Uncapped Yes
One Pass Friends Rate 30% to 45% off Best Flexible Rate Colleague + up to 5 Friends 50 No

IHG's public page confirms the 30-night and 50-night figures, the two-room-per-night cap, the seven-night maximum per stay, and that the food and beverage benefit applies to Plus Ones on both the One Pass Rate and the Flex Rate. The rest of the detail below comes from program material circulated by IHG properties and reported by loyalty site Verylvke, so treat those figures as well-sourced rather than officially published.

03The One Pass Rate Is Not a Percentage Discount

This is where most guides get it wrong. The One Pass Rate is a fixed nightly price determined by the property's average rate, not a percentage off:

Property average nightly rate You pay
Under $70 $39
$70 to $109.99 $49
$110 to $124.99 $59
$125 to $149.99 $69
$150 to $199.99 $79
$200 to $299.99 $89
$300 and above 65% off

Rate bands as reported in early 2026. IHG does not publish this table publicly, and the figures may change.

Read down that column and the pattern is obvious: the discount is nearly flat at the bottom of the portfolio and severe at the top. A Holiday Inn Express averaging $95 drops to $49, which is a good but not remarkable saving. An InterContinental averaging $260 drops to $89.

The colleague and their Plus One share 30 of these nights per calendar year. Only one Plus One can be designated at a time, and if that person is removed, the slot cannot be reassigned until the following January.

04The Flex Rate Is the One Nobody Mentions

The Flex Rate runs 35% to 50% off, carries the same 50% food and beverage benefit, and tends to have far better availability than the fixed rate at busy properties. It also has no cap on the number of nights you can book.

A Plus One is not limited to 30 nights a year. They get 30 nights at fixed pricing, plus an unlimited supply of nights at 35% to 50% off, plus half off food and drink on every one of those stays.

Compared against a Friend, who is capped at 50 nights shared among six people and gets no dining benefit, the gap is much wider than the headline numbers suggest.

Full disclosure We sell One Pass access, including the Plus One tier described above, so check the numbers below against your own dates rather than taking our word for the conclusion.

05The Friends Rate Is Simpler and More Crowded

The Friends Rate is a straight 30% to 45% off the Best Flexible Rate at participating properties, with no dining benefit. Eligible stays still earn IHG One Rewards points and still count toward status and Milestone Rewards, which is the single biggest improvement over the old Friends & Family Rate.

IHG defines one Friends allowance of 50 nights shared between the colleague and up to five designated Friends. Confirm with whoever arranges your access how many people are drawing from the same pool before you assume the full 50 are yours. Either way, booking earlier in the calendar year is safer than later.

We offer this tier in 25-night and 50-night sizes. The split is our own packaging rather than an IHG tier: IHG defines a single Friends allowance of 50 nights, and the smaller option exists as a lower-cost entry point for people who will not use a full allocation.

06Rules That Apply to All Three Rates

Every One Pass rate is elite qualifying. IHG's page confirms that stays earn One Rewards points and count toward both status and Milestone Rewards, so a discounted stay still moves you up the tiers.

Before
Public booking links, 90-day booking window
Now
Designated access in the rate dropdown, 180 days out

If One Pass inventory covers only part of your trip, you can book the remaining nights on another rate and have the hotel connect the reservations at check-in. One Pass rates appear in the rate preference dropdown once your access is active, and the Flex Rate typically shows as the fallback when fixed-price rooms are gone.

Two rooms per night, no stay longer than seven nights
Reported limit of 14 nights per property per calendar year
Six Senses and Iberostar are excluded; suite upgrade rewards cannot be applied
The person who booked must show ID at check-in and stay the full reservation

Most hotels honor normal elite benefits on these bookings, though a handful of properties reportedly extend none at all regardless of status.

07Running the Numbers on Two Real Bookings

Take a Kimpton where the Best Flexible Rate is $280.

Friend at 40% off
$280 Best Flexible Rate
$168
Plus One, fixed rate
$200–$299.99 band
$89
Gap per night $79

And that is before the dining benefit does anything. If the fixed inventory is sold out, the Plus One falls back to Flex at around 40% and pays what the Friend pays, but still takes 50% off dinner. At a Kimpton restaurant where two people spend $120, that is $60 back on a single evening.

Now take a Holiday Inn Express at $95. The Friend at 40% pays $57. The Plus One on the fixed rate pays $49. The gap is $8, and there is usually no hotel restaurant worth a discount. Everything that makes the Plus One tier compelling has evaporated.

The difference in access cost between our 50-night Friends package and our 30-night One Pass Rate package is $499. At the Kimpton, seven nights covers it. At the Holiday Inn Express, you would need more than sixty nights, which exceeds what the allowance permits.

08Who Should Not Buy Either of These

We would rather say this plainly than have you find out afterward.

Skip both
Fewer than five IHG nights a year — the access cost will not amortize no matter how good a single night looks.
Skip the One Pass Rate
Almost only Holiday Inn, Express, Candlewood, Staybridge, or avid — the fixed price at those ADR bands is too close to the Friends Rate.

Think carefully if your travel dates move around. Fixed-rate inventory is limited, and the whole calculation above assumes you can actually book the rate on the dates you need. Flex availability is better, but Flex is where the deepest savings stop. And if your trips concentrate on one city and one hotel, the 14-night per-property limit will bind before your allowance does.

09Choosing Between Them

The decision comes down to two variables: how many IHG nights you will realistically book this year, and what those properties cost.

If you are booking 15 or more nights and a meaningful share of them are at InterContinental, Kimpton, Regent, Vignette, voco, or full-service Crowne Plaza properties, the Plus One tier is the better economics. If you are booking mostly select-service hotels, or you want the lowest possible entry cost, the Friends Rate is the sensible starting point — you are not paying for a dining benefit you will not use.

Option Nights Price
One Pass Rate 30 US$999
One Pass Friends Rate 25 US$290
One Pass Friends Rate 50 US$500

10One Last Note on Sourcing

IHG publishes the night limits, room limits, stay length, dining benefit eligibility, and loyalty earning on its own One Pass page. It does not publish the fixed-price table, the Flex Rate discount range, the per-property night cap, or the brand exclusions. Those come from material distributed to IHG colleagues and properties.

We think that material is accurate, and it matches what customers report seeing at booking. But it is not the same class of source, and anyone quoting the $39-to-$89 table as official IHG policy is overstating what can be verified.

Search your own dates before you decide, and compare the One Pass rate against the standard member rate every time. On some properties and some dates, the member rate wins.

Discounts and availability vary by property, date, and season. Confirm current terms with IHG and UpgradeMyTrip before booking.
