Hyatt and Air Canada Partner Up: A New Way to Unlock the Hyatt Globalist Challenge

Globalist normally costs 60 nights. Through the new Aeroplan partnership it costs 20 — here's who qualifies, the three routes into Aeroplan status, and the rules that decide whether the challenge actually works for you.

World of Hyatt and Air Canada's Aeroplan launched a reciprocal partnership on July 15, 2026. Most of what it contains is forgettable: 2:1 point transfers in both directions, a CAD $20 flight credit, the option to swap Hyatt points for a small pile of Aeroplan points.

The exception is the status challenge. Eligible Aeroplan elite members can now register for Hyatt's official 90-day challenge and earn Globalist after 20 qualifying nights, against a standard requirement of 60. Registration for this offer closes December 31, 2026.

Flowchart: three routes into Aeroplan elite status leading to the Hyatt Globalist challenge

01

The Numbers

Register and you receive a 90-day trial upgrade to Explorist status immediately. From there:

Nights completed in 90 days Status earned Standard requirement
Registration Explorist (90-day trial only)
4 nights Discoverist 10 nights
10 nights Explorist (made permanent) 30 nights
20 nights Globalist 60 nights

That first row is worth reading twice. The Explorist status you receive at registration is a trial, so if you finish the 90 days with fewer than 4 nights, you keep nothing.

Globalist is the tier that actually matters at Hyatt: complimentary breakfast or Club access, suite upgrades at check-in, 4 PM late checkout, guaranteed availability with 48 hours' notice, and waived resort fees on both paid and award stays. Cutting its requirement from 60 nights to 20 makes this the most aggressive hotel status shortcut currently available.

Status posts to your account within 7 business days of the checkout that completes the requirement.

Who Can Register

Per Hyatt's published terms, you must be one of the following, and have already linked your accounts:

Aeroplan 25K, 35K, 50K, 75K, or Super Elite member
One attempt per calendar year.
Eligible Aeroplan Premium credit cardholder
Two attempts per calendar year — and Discoverist status automatically on linking, so the challenge starts from a higher floor.

Linking takes about a minute. The names on both accounts have to match, both have to be in good standing, and only one Aeroplan account can be linked to a Hyatt account. You link once. If you unlink later, both programs reserve the right to impose a waiting period of at least 30 days before you can link again.

Three Routes to Aeroplan 25K

If you don't hold Aeroplan status today, there are three ways to get it — and only one of them involves flying.

1 · Earn it

Aeroplan grants 25K status for either 25,000 Status Qualifying Miles plus CAD $3,000 in Status Qualifying Dollars, or for earning 100,000 Aeroplan points from any eligible source in a qualifying year. That second option matters more than it looks, because "any eligible source" covers credit card spend and partner earning, not just flights.

2 · The U.S. Aeroplan credit card

The Chase-issued Aeroplan Card in the United States grants Aeroplan 25K status for the remainder of the calendar year in which you're approved, plus the following full calendar year, extendable afterward through card spend. For most U.S. travelers this is the fastest route: no Air Canada flying, no existing hotel status. We don't sell credit cards and we earn nothing if you apply for one — we include it because leaving it out would give you an incomplete picture.

One honest caveat

Hyatt's terms name "Aeroplan 25K, 35K, 50K, 75K, or Super Elite Member, or a Premium Credit Cardholder," and the cardholder language across both programs is written around Canadian-issued cards. U.S. Chase cardholders receive genuine Aeroplan 25K elite status, which should qualify them under the elite status route rather than the cardholder route. Confirm your eligibility on the registration page before building plans around it.

3 · Marriott Bonvoy Titanium or Ambassador

Air Canada and Marriott run a reciprocal status match with no published end date. Marriott Bonvoy Titanium Elite and Ambassador Elite members can link their accounts and receive complimentary Aeroplan 25K. Which makes the chain:

Marriott Titanium Aeroplan 25K Link to Hyatt 20-night challenge Hyatt Globalist

There's no loophole involved here. These are two official partnerships that happen to connect end to end.

04

The Condition Most People Will Miss

Marriott's status match terms exclude trial status. Elite status obtained through a trial program, including "Taste of Elite" and similar promotions, does not qualify for the Aeroplan match. The Titanium or Ambassador status you match with has to be status you hold under normal program terms.

If you're currently Platinum, you're 25 nights short of Titanium, and the match isn't available until you close that gap. For most people that's a reason to look at one of the other two routes instead. Chasing 25 more Marriott nights purely to unlock a Hyatt challenge is a long way around.

05

Before You Register: The Rules That Decide Whether This Works

The 90-day clock starts the day you register, and Hyatt's terms are explicit that it cannot be extended. Five things follow.

01
Nights before registration don't count
Stays completed before your trial period begins are not applied retroactively, even if they would otherwise be Tier-Qualifying Nights.
02
Your checkout has to land inside the window
If you check in during the trial period but check out after it ends, no nights from that reservation count. Not the ones that fell inside the window — none of them. This is the rule that catches people.
03
Only nights from actual stays count
Hyatt's terms specifically exclude World of Hyatt Credit Card night credits, promotional offers granting additional Tier-Qualifying Nights, and any night earned by a method other than a stay during the trial period.
04
More properties count than you'd expect
Qualifying nights can come from participating Hyatt hotels and resorts worldwide, participating Mr & Mrs Smith properties, and eligible stays at The Venetian Resort Las Vegas booked through Hyatt channels. If you're hunting for nights, that widens the field considerably — and most coverage of this partnership hasn't mentioned it.
05
Register last, not first
Map out your stays for the next 90 days, confirm the math reaches 20, then register. There is no partial credit at 18 nights and no extension.
06

How Long the Status Lasts

This is where the offer gets more valuable than it first appears. Status earned through the challenge runs through the remainder of the calendar year in which you registered, plus the following 14 months.

Register anytime in 2026
Globalist through February 28, 2028
The same end date whether you register in August or in December. No advantage to rushing, no penalty for using the full runway to plan your stays.

It also doesn't consume future attempts. Aeroplan elite members get one challenge per calendar year, so completing one in 2026 leaves 2027's attempt intact.

07

Everything Else in the Partnership

Briefly, because none of it changes anyone's plans:

Benefit Detail Verdict
Aeroplan points on Hyatt stays 500 Aeroplan points per eligible stay, instead of your Hyatt points Only worth it on very cheap stays
Hyatt → Aeroplan conversion 2:1, minimum 5,000 Hyatt points Poor ratio
Aeroplan → Hyatt conversion 2:1, elite members only, minimum 500 Aeroplan points Poor ratio — and you receive Bonus Points, which don't count toward tier status
Aeroplan points → Hyatt free nights Category 1–4 and Category 1–7 Free Night Awards Situational, useful on peak dates
Hyatt points → Aeroplan certificate 50,000 Hyatt points for a 30,000-point Flight Reward Certificate Skip — Aeroplan is a transfer partner of Amex, Chase, Capital One and Bilt
Air Canada flight credit CAD $20 round-trip, CAD $10 one-way, annually Free, but small

Two clarifications on the flight credit, since it's commonly reported wrong. It goes to Discoverist, Explorist and Globalist members — all three tiers, not Explorist and above. And it must be applied at the time of booking through an Air Canada channel.

On the Free Night Award row: redeeming Aeroplan points for a Category 1–4 or 1–7 award is worth checking on peak dates, but the pricing is set by Aeroplan rather than by Hyatt's award chart, so it doesn't always beat booking with Hyatt points directly. If you want a Hyatt free night without holding either balance, that's available separately — Hyatt Free Night Certificate.

Separately, Hyatt Explorist and Globalist members will eventually be able to run a challenge in the other direction, toward Aeroplan elite status. Air Canada has said this arrives later in fall 2026, with one attempt annually. No terms published yet.

The credit card earning multipliers (2 Hyatt Bonus Points and up to 2.5 Aeroplan points per CAD $1 at Hyatt properties) apply only to Aeroplan cards issued in Canada, and the Hyatt Bonus Points they generate do not count toward tier status.

08

Working the Challenge

Twenty nights in ninety days is achievable, but it's worth being honest with yourself about the number before you register — and worth optimizing the stays you do make. Where you stand determines what you need.

If your travel already covers 20 nights

All you need is the challenge registered against your account at the right moment. That's a small piece of admin rather than a project.

Hyatt Explorist / Globalist Fast Track Challenge →
If you're close but short

Say you've mapped out 14 nights and need 20 — the gap can be closed a night at a time rather than restructuring your travel around it.

Hyatt Qualifying Elite Night →
If 20 nights isn't realistic at all

The challenge route isn't the right tool, and registering anyway just burns your one annual attempt. We offer a managed Globalist package for travelers in that position — and it's worth a conversation about your situation before you buy either way.

Hyatt Globalist Through February 2028 →
09

Don't Spend Three Months Without Benefits

Whichever route you take, there's a gap most people don't plan for. You spend the challenge window staying at Hyatt properties on a trial Explorist — no breakfast, no suite upgrades, and no waived resort fees on paid rates — right up until the moment you no longer need the help.

A Guest of Honor award closes that gap. It applies full Globalist treatment to a stay for someone who doesn't hold the status: complimentary breakfast, room upgrades where available, late checkout, waived resort fees. It has to be used on a booking made through Hyatt's own channels.

For a specific trip where you want the room rather than the perks, a Suite Upgrade Award confirms a standard suite in advance instead of leaving it to check-in availability. And at properties with a lounge, Club Access covers lounge breakfast, snacks, and a quiet place to work during the day.

10

The Short Version

Hyatt's top tier normally costs 60 nights. Through the Aeroplan partnership it costs 20, and the entry ticket is Aeroplan 25K — which you can earn, match into from Marriott Titanium, or get from a U.S. credit card.

If you're already Marriott Titanium or Ambassador, you're one status match away and that's where to start. If you're not, the credit card route beats the flying route by a wide margin.

Registration closes December 31, 2026 — but there's no rush to click it. Your status expires on the same date whether you register in August or December, and the 90-day clock only starts once you do. Get the 20 nights on your calendar first.

Details in this article come from Hyatt's official challenge terms and the Hyatt and Air Canada press releases. Program terms can change without notice, so confirm on the registration page before enrolling.
