Marriott Elites Now Get Free JAL Status Points. Here's What Yours Is Actually Worth
The new two-way status partnership hands every linked Bonvoy member JAL FLY ON Points each year — no flying required. But the headline 30,000 number only tells part of the story. Here's the math for your tier.
On July 14, 2026, Marriott Bonvoy and JAL Mileage Bank turned their old points-transfer arrangement into a two-way status partnership. Link the accounts and Marriott hands you JAL FLY ON Points every year, without you setting foot on a plane.
The number getting quoted everywhere is 30,000, which happens to be exactly what JAL asks for its first elite tier. That number is real, but it only applies if you're Titanium or Ambassador. Everyone else gets less, and less changes what you can do with it.
What You Get
Marriott grants FLY ON Points annually, based on the tier you hold on the day you register:

JAL's terms allow up to six weeks for points to appear, though reports since launch have them posting much faster, often within a day.
First, the Basics
If you already know your way around JMB and oneworld, skip ahead.
JAL Mileage Bank is Japan Airlines' loyalty program, and JAL belongs to oneworld, the alliance that also includes American, British Airways, Alaska, Qatar, Cathay Pacific, Qantas, Iberia, Finnair and Malaysia. Status earned with any one member is recognized by all of them. That's the reason a Japanese carrier's elite tier is worth anything to someone who mostly flies domestic US routes.
JMB runs two separate currencies, and they have nothing to do with each other. Miles are what you redeem for award tickets. FLY ON Points do one job only, which is to measure progress toward elite status. You can't spend them, transfer them, or turn them into a seat. A lot of the confusion around this promotion comes from people treating the two as interchangeable.
FLY ON Points also reset. JAL calculates status on the calendar year: points collected January through December set your tier, then the counter goes back to zero. Nothing carries over. A two-year Marriott Platinum membership therefore does not bank you 40,000 points. It gets you 20,000 in one calendar year and a separate 20,000 in the next.
Here are the FLY ON tiers and what each is worth across the alliance:

Ruby is the entry level and does not include lounge access. Sapphire does. That gap is the thing to keep in mind while you read the rest of this.
The 30,000 Threshold Has a Second Condition
Most coverage of this promotion leaves this part out.
JMB Crystal requires 30,000 FLY ON Points, but at least 15,000 of those have to come from JAL Group flights specifically. Partner flying alone won't get you there. Sapphire is 50,000 with 25,000 on JAL Group, and Diamond is 100,000 with 50,000. JAL publishes the full conditions here.
The partnership points count toward that JAL Group requirement. That changes the math at every tier.
Your 30,000 or 40,000 satisfies the full Crystal requirement — the total and the JAL Group portion both. JAL grants Crystal directly, and existing FLY ON Points may land you higher.
Your 20,000 doesn't reach Crystal alone, but it clears the 15,000 JAL Group hurdle with 5,000 left over. The remaining 10,000 can come from any oneworld carrier — none of it has to be on JAL.
10,000 points helps if you were already flying toward status, but on its own it isn't a shortcut.

Being straight about what that buys: 20,000 points a year and a cleared JAL Group requirement. It does not hand you Crystal by itself. We don't currently offer Titanium, and no amount of Platinum adds up to it.
What 10,000 Points Actually Takes
FLY ON Points come from sector mileage multiplied by an accrual rate set by your booking class. Only JAL Group and oneworld member flights count. Non-alliance partners, promotional miles, shopping and hotel miles are all excluded.
Booking class is the part that decides everything, and it's not the same thing as the cabin you sit in. Here's JAL's published table for American Airlines flights:

Run a US East Coast to Tokyo round trip through that. The distance is roughly 13,400 miles both ways:
So a single long-haul round trip covers the gap in premium economy or better. In the discounted economy fares most people actually buy, it doesn't, and one trip won't get you there no matter how far you fly. You'd need two or three, or paying up for a higher booking class.

Two things will quietly sink this if you get them wrong:
Fly American, British Airways or Alaska and your account defaults to their own program. FLY ON Points only accrue on flights credited to JAL Mileage Bank, so enter your JMB number when you book. A flight credited to the wrong program can't be moved afterward.
Whatever tier you hold on registration day locks in your grant for the whole calendar year. Go from Gold to Platinum in September and you're still on 10,000 until January. If you're planning to buy or challenge your way up, finish that first, then link.
Is Crystal Worth Chasing?
Crystal maps to oneworld Ruby, which across the alliance gets you:
On JAL's own flights, Crystal adds bonus miles of up to 55%, priority boarding, priority baggage and extra allowance, plus lounge coupons on some domestic routes. Those are JAL's own member perks rather than oneworld benefits, so they don't follow you onto American or British Airways.
Whether it's worth it comes down to how you fly. If you're in economy on transpacific routes a few times a year, skipping the check-in queue and getting a seat assignment that isn't a middle in the back row is worth something. If you were counting on lounges, this isn't the tier that does it.
Going the Other Way
JAL elites get Marriott status out of this too, and the terms are specific:

One restriction trips people up: Elite Night Credits don't count toward those night requirements. Not credit card nights, not promotional credits. Only real stays on qualifying rates, completed within six months of linking.
The Fine Print
- One JMB account and one Marriott Bonvoy account, both belonging to the same person. Names have to match across both, and mismatched names are the most common reason a link fails.
- Status granted through the partnership can't be stacked toward a higher tier in either program. Complimentary Crystal is not progress toward Sapphire.
- The grant repeats every year the accounts stay linked, recalculated at whatever tier you hold at the time.
Where This Leaves You
Register today. It's free, it takes two minutes, and you come out of it a oneworld Ruby.
Worth doing if you have oneworld flying coming up in the same calendar year — and worth checking your booking classes before you assume it works. The 20,000 points plus a long-haul round trip in premium economy or better gets you to Crystal. In cheap economy you're looking at two or three trips. Without any flying, the points sit there and expire in December.
The tier you hold when you register is the one that counts, so if you want to be on the useful side of that line, you have the rest of this calendar year to get there.
